The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern dates back to 1886, when a Swiss immigrant named Felix Mattei built the tavern as the primary stagecoach stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Since its earliest days, Mattei’s has been a community hub; the 19th-century water tower still serves as a landmark for locals and visitors alike.The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern has long held a fabled place in Central Coast lore enjoyed for generations, the beloved landmark opened a new chapter in Winter 2023 as the definitive luxury destination in Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Historical Architecture

Historical architecture and modern comfort harmoniously woven into one, rich with rustic sophistication and legitimate history, Mattei’s Tavern effectively melds old with new. The Tavern Building dates back to 1886 and the original cottages have been painstakingly restored to preserve their distinctive details, while new buildings sit alongside them – seamlessly blending with the authentic structures.

In 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen began creating what we now cherish as The M Solvang. Originally, it opened its doors as an apartment building called “Solvang Gaard.” The charming term “gaard” means a delightful courtyard surrounded by buildings. With the magic touch of Viggo Brandt-Erichsen, a talented Solvang sculptor and artist, the building embraced the enchanting Danish provincial architectural style.

By 1953, the Hansens had a brilliant idea! They transformed their lovely structure into “Solvang’s first motel,” realizing that the thousands of tourists flocking to Solvang and the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley needed a cozy place to stay. Thus, the traditional Danish building began welcoming travelers from near and far.

Fast forward to 1999, the gardens bloomed and the name blossomed into Solvang Gardens Lodge. Today, The M Solvang proudly carries on the legacy, meticulously restoring the motel’s original 1950s Danish mid-century modern charm.
