The winery started in 2004 with a patch of raw earth, a bucket of grapevines and plenty of sweat from family and friends who joined to embark on the extraordinary. From this work emerged a commitment to produce authentic, handcrafted wines emblematic of the vintage, earth and effort.

Rhone Varietals

We focus on crafting elegant, alluring Rhone varietals with grapes sourced from extraordinary vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. We are the boutique in boutique, creating only 1,000 cases each vintage.

While we began making wine in the garage, we now offer barrel-tasting sessions at the winery along with vineyard tours and Grenache Roadshows for wine club members. The majority of our production is sold through our tasting room in historic, eclectic Los Alamos, California.

Our Focus

Clementine Carter elevates cool climate Rhône varieties grown in Santa Barbara Wine Country. We love all our varietals, especially Grenache and Mourvèdre. Grenache is challenging to farm with big clusters, big berries, and thick skins. Here, farming Grenache is about nuance. It’s about finding the right balance to bring out the elegant, finessed flavors of the wine.

Our Journey

I’ve worked with almost every Grenache vineyard in Santa Barbara County. I search for those that resonate with me and my goals. My aim is to deliver a pure wine experience with pure intention. After 20 years of making wine, I joke that I don’t really know what Grenache tastes like. Each wine should taste like its home.

“The site, the farming team, the camaraderie, and mutual respect are what make wines delicious.”

Clementine Carter has been a joy to explore. We’ve found amazing partners. Rachel Taylor drew the sketches on our labels. Alexandra Gibbs took all the photos for Clementine Carter. Andrew Harner designed our labels.

Sonja Magdevski – proprietor, winemaker, and writer – produced all the goods in the bottles. Enjoy.
