Larry Schaffer, our owner and winemaker, had a master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis and currently is an instructor in their online Winemaking Certificate program as well. He understands the ‘science’ behind how wine is made but excels at making wine as approachable as possible, regardless of your wine knowledge.

Buscador Winery

Buscador Winery is truthful. Honest. And on the wine journey with you. Matt Kowalczyk, owner/winemaker, spent the past twelve years working with the best Santa Ynez Valley wine makers, sourcing grapes from the best vineyards, practicing innovative wine making techniques and creating a distinctive brand even before opening the doors. Stephanie, wife/co-owner, planted vineyards in Santa Rita Hills, worked in the cellars of Marlborough, New Zealand and has managed harvest for local growers. Both will greet you at their unique winery and tasting room where you can touch the barrels and taste the future.

Matt produces limited release handcrafted boutique lots focused on bold but smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Petit Sirah, Syrah, Grenache Rose’, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. Of course, no gateway to Sta. Rita Hills winery would be complete without Pinot Noir. All of our grapes are sourced locally. Buscador Wine truly features something for everyone!

Bill Wathen and Dick Doré (the Foxen Boys) have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time their dedication has remained the same: the creation of small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a straightforward and minimalist approach to winemaking.

The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, and English sea captain and Dick’s great-great grandfather. Benjamin Foxen came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800’s and purchased the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in 1837 with a Mexican Land Grant that totaled nearly 9000 acres, that comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive anchor as his ranch cattle brand, which became the trademark of the Foxen Vineyard & Winery. We are proud that we have made our home on the now 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands.

Dreamcôte Wine Co. is a small-producer of low alcohol, low sulfur wines + hard ciders. We produce a less traditional range of carbonic red wines like Gamay, a few pétillant-natural “pét-nat” (OG sparkling) wines as well as an annual bottling/kegging of hard apple cider fermented with fruit and botanicals from our small farm in Ballard, CA. The tasting line-up changes every vintage. Come taste the rainbow at our foot tasting room in Los Olivos. The tasting room is just off the main drag, and offers a less busy, fun, unpretentious, pet friendly setting with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Buttonwood Farm Winery

Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard is a small gem set in the splendor of Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Our 39-acre vineyard stretches across a sunny mesa on our 106-acre property.

In 1983, we started planting wine grapes and now have 33,000 vines. This is a small amount in the world of wine, but it is huge to us. They grow perfectly in our warm, eastern Santa Ynez Valley location.

Buttonwood’s varietal mix of Sauvignon Blancs, Grenache Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Grenache and Syrah reflects the preferences of our founders for Bordeaux and Rhône style wines.

Farm to Table

The original farm-to-table winery, we also grow other fruits and vegetables, which are showcased at our annual All Farm Dinner each August.

Few wineries in California produce 25 different wines, including Bordeaux, Rhône, Burgundy and Italian varietals. But then, few wineries can match the intimate relationship Lucas & Lewellen has with Santa Barbara County’s amazing winegrowing potential. Co-founded by viticulturist Louis Lucas and wine enthusiast Royce Lewellen in 1996, this small winery boasts three vineyards totaling 400 acres of vines, in the county’s three main growing regions: Santa Maria Valley, Los Alamos Valley and Santa Ynez Valley. All are meticulously tended by Louis, who planted his first vines here in 1970. With Winemaker Megan McGrath Gates heading up the cellar, little Lucas & Lewellen has become one of Santa Barbara County’s most popular wineries.

Over 20 years ago two young aspiring winemakers met, each bringing a vision and a drive to produce world-class wine. Focusing on the Burgundian roots of pinot noir and chardonnay, they paid homage to France. They were keen on making their own footprint and forging a style that was uniquely Californian. The wines embrace the power, pedigree and richness of the Sta. Rita Hills, that has become the trademark of Brewer–Clifton.

Chanin Wine Co. is dedicated to crafting wines from Santa Barbara County that reflect the individual vineyard in which they are grown. We focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two grapes that are especially revealing of subtle differences in geography, geology and climate. Our grapes are grown in Santa Barbara County, where cool coastal winds, diverse marine based soils and a long growing season provide an exciting and unique environment for Burgundian varieties.

The vineyards are the focus of all of our wines and each wine is made from grapes grown at one vineyard and not blended. We search out old vines and make wine from some of the oldest in the county. This allows us to make refreshingly balanced wines at lower alcohol levels than most California “blockbuster” or “cult” styled wines. Through low yields, improved farming techniques and gentle winemaking we aim to create a wine that pairs well with food and is delicious young but is also age-worthy. All of our vineyards are organic or sustainably farmed.

Our winemaking philosophy is rooted in representing each individual vineyard by emphasizing balance, finesse, and complexity. We avoid excessive alcohol, and modern winemaking additives (such as commercial yeasts, bacteria, enzymes) that can overshadow vineyard characteristics. We also do not filter our wines or use intrusive wine processing machines. The goal is to grow grapes that are so healthy none of the above is needed.

Ken Brown is recognized as one of Santa Barbara County’s pioneering winemakers and innovators. He was among the first vintners to realize the tremendous promise for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in this cool-climate appellation in the mid-1970’s. He was also the first winemaker to introduce the Syrah grape, as well as Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, to Santa Barbara County. With an uncompromising drive for quality, Ken constantly reevaluates everything he does in his winemaking endeavors. With the benefit of nearly 40 years’ experience in this region, Ken’s goal is to focus on exceptional Pinot Noir from leading vineyards in Santa Rita Hills and several other select locations in the county. With the introduction of Ken Brown Wines in 2005, Ken feels that he has reached a place where he can optimize the best sources of Pinot Noir with uncompromised winemaking. His wines feature Pinot Noir in addition to limited bottlings of Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
